Relieve Pain, Boost Gut Health Instantly
Sometimes unexpected challenges appear out of nowhere. A few years ago, I developed severe back pain without doing anything unusual to trigger it. It wasn't just any discomfort, I could no longer sit comfortably for some days at work, not to mention to concentrate. My doctor suggested painkillers and patience, but something inside me knew there had to be another way.
A friend’s advice led me to try a gut detox using natron (backing powder, sodium bicarbonate or E500). What happened next changed my perspective on health forever. I took natron as my friend suggested and after just one session, the pain was gone. The cause? A diverticulum in my intestine was clogged, causing pressure against my back and possibly my spine. Flushing my gut provided immediate relief and gave me an unexpected energy boost back into normal life.
In this article, I’ll share my experience with natron, the science behind natron detox and practical steps to incorporate it into your detox routine, if you feel fine with it.

Why Detoxing Your Gut with Natron Works
After addressing the pain I described earlier, I felt the need to dive deeper into understanding natron and its benefits for the body. I was amazed that something as simple as a natron detox could solve a problem my doctor suggested I should handle with just painkillers and patience. This experience sparked my curiosity and led me to explore the remarkable properties of natron. What began as a practical solution to relieve discomfort turned into a transformative approach that reset my gut and boosted my overall wellness.
This journey has inspired me to share why natron can be a powerful method for detoxification and revitalization.
Since I began using the Natron Detox, I’ve found myself recommending it more frequently to friends and clients who ask for advice on how to kickstart weight loss or adopt healthier eating habits. It’s especially popular at the beginning of the year, when many are looking for a fresh start, but I’ve seen people benefit from it during other seasons as well. By starting with a clean and refreshed gut, they often feel more energized and motivated to embrace a healthier lifestyle.
Below, I’ve outlined some key benefits and insights that make natron detox an effective and accessible solution for gut health.
Pro's of Natron
Deep Gut Detoxification: Natron quickly flushes out toxins, waste and undigested food, which leaves your gut refreshed and your body feeling lighter and more energized.
Enhanced Alkaline Balance: Many of us suffer from over-acidity, which can lead to inflammation and fatigue. The alkalizing properties of natron help to neutralize acidity and support overall metabolic health.
Quick Relief from Digestive Discomfort: Gas, bloating and indigestion don't have a chance. You can experience a quick and noticeable relief with Natron.
Affordable and Accessible: You don’t need fancy supplements or expensive procedures. Natron is an inexpensive, natural and clean remedy without harmfull additives you can use at home.
All of these benefits, in my view, come together to help "reset" my gut and give my body a fresh start with nourishing foods.
Natron next to other ingredients is also commonly used to prepare for medical procedures like gastrointestinal endoscopies to cleanse the gut effectively. This highlights its value as a trusted and practical solution for internal cleansing.
Now, let’s take a closer look at some potential drawbacks you should consider or at least know before starting your own natron detox.
Cons to Be Aware Of
Temporary Disruption of Gut Microbiota: Beneficial bacteria may be flushed out too, so follow up with probiotics and fermented foods to restore gut balance.
Electrolyte Fluctuations: Natron can cause mild dehydration or sodium imbalance. Drink plenty of water that day and consider electrolyte-rich fluids before and after detox.
Overuse Risk: Excessive use may lead to gastrointestinal discomfort, so limit natron detoxes to a few times a year.
Short-Term Fix: While effective, it doesn’t address chronic gut issues or dietary imbalances. Use it as part of a broader health plan.
Taste: Drinking natron isn’t particularly pleasant, as it has a strange flavor that might take some getting used to. To make it more tolerable, you can drink it quickly and follow up with a sip of plain water.
Is Natron Detox Right for You?
Before trying a natron detox, ask yourself:
Do you struggle with bloating, gas, or digestive discomfort?
Are you looking for a natural way to support your gut health by flushing out toxins effectively and restoring balance?
Do you just can't get rid of the feeling of fullness?
Do you understand the pros and cons of the natron detox?
Are you prepared to follow up with probiotics or fermented foods?
If you answered yes, then this could be the reset your body is looking for.
If you have any concerns or pre-existing medical conditions like high blood pressure or kidney issues, it’s important to address them first. Consulting a healthcare professional ensures that a natron detox aligns with your unique health needs and circumstances. Taking this precaution allows you to approach the detox process safely and effectively while prioritizing your overall well-being.
How to Perform a Natron Detox: My Step-by-Step Guide
If you’re ready to give natron detoxing a try, here’s my personal routine. It’s simple but effective.
Preparation Tips
Choose a free day or weekend morning when you can stay home at least until noon.
Dont eat something before, so best to start early after waking up in the morning.
Ensure you have easy access to a bathroom, you’ll need it!
Consider preparing a vegetable soup the day before. This provides you with a healthy, warm broth that serves as a homemade electrolyte drink to keep you hydrated and nourished.
The Process
Start with the Mixture: Fill a mug with room-temperature water and add two lightly heaped teaspoons of natron. Stir until fully dissolved.
Drink and Move: Drink the mixture, wait 2 min, then lie on the ground. Roll gently from side to side for approx. 30 seconds to help the solution reach more of your digestive tract.
Hydrate: Follow up with a mug of plain water to help your body flush out toxins effectively and stay hydrated.
Repeat: Wait 10 minutes and repeat the process. Do this three times in total.
What to Expect
Within 2-3 hours, you’ll likely make several trips to the bathroom (usually 3-4 times for me).
Don't be surprised it's called "flush out" for a reason
Afterward, you’ll feel a sense of lightness and relief.
Post-Detox Care
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and support the detox process. Consider incorporating electrolyte-rich fluids to replenish lost minerals and maintain balance. Here are some examples I use:
Homemade vegetable soup (broth)
Coconut water
Water with a bit of sea salt
Eat light meals that day, like:
vegetable soup
plain rice
steamed vegetables
mashed sweet potatoes
or lightly toasted bread to give your gut a gentle restart and provide easily digestible nutrients.
The procedure described above is how I personally approach a natron detox. You can start with a smaller amount, such as one teaspoon, to see how your body reacts and gradually increase it during your next attempt if you feel comfortable. In my experience, one teaspoon didn’t produce noticeable effects, but everyone’s body is different. If two teaspoons don’t feel sufficient for you, consider trying three.
Always listen to your body, as the ideal amount can vary from person to person.
My Detox Routine: A Sustainable Practice
I perform a natron detox 2-3 times per year, typically after indulgent periods like the christmas holidays or whenever I feel my gut could use a reset. Each session brings noticeable benefits e.g.: increased energy levels, relief from bloating and an overall sense of lightness and well-being that recharges both my body and mind.
In addition, it’s an effective method to help detoxify heavy metals and other harmful substances that might be hindering your gut from functioning at its best. By flushing out these unwanted elements, your digestive system can reset and operate more efficiently which is supporting your overall health and well-being.
What I’ve learned over the years is that detoxing isn’t just about physical health. It’s about taking a moment to care for your body and acknowledge its incredible ability to heal and adapt.
Conclusion: A Fresh Start for Your Gut and Body
My journey with natron detox began as a desperate attempt to relieve back pain. Today it has become a regular part of my wellness routine. Whether you’re seeking relief from digestive discomfort or just looking to refresh your body, a natron detox can be a powerful tool.
If you’re inspired to try it, remember: Listen to your body, stay hydrated and enjoy the feeling of lightness that comes with a clean gut.

It turns out natron is not the same as the baking soda for sale in Canada - missing the sodium decahydrate. I will have to order some.
